What Makes a RAM Truck “Commercial”?

Weight Restrictions

Weight is one of the primary ways to identify a commercial vehicle. In the state of Wisconsin, vehicles that weigh over 26,000 pounds are considered commercial. When looking at a vehicle’s weight, they consider the highest of the following:

• Manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)
• Manufacturer’s gross combination weight rating (GCWR), when the towed unit has a GVWR, registered weight, or actual gross weight that exceeds 10,000 pounds
• Actual weight
• Registered weight

Load Materials

Your truck’s classification also depends on what you haul or tow. Under federal law, if you carry any hazardous materials that require placarding, your vehicle is considered a commercial vehicle. This refers to any vehicle with signs indicating it has hazardous materials on board, even if it’s a subcompact car.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Another significant distinction between regular trucks and commercial trucks is the driver’s license you are required to carry. If you drive a commercial truck, you need a commercial driver’s license, also known as a CDL. To earn the license, you must be able to pass a knowledge test and a test of your driving skills. Certain other driving scenarios – using airbrakes or transporting hazmats, for example – will require additional testing and may require separate endorsements.
