RAM Trucks Towing FAQ

When you need towing power, it’s essential to understand your needs and ensure you have a truck that meets them. However, towing capacities and terms can be difficult to understand. We’ve assembled a towing guide for RAM trucks at Bernard’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM to help.
What’s a Heavy-Duty Truck?
Trucks are typically classified as light-duty or heavy-duty. A light-duty truck, such as a RAM 1500, doesn’t usually have as much power as a heavy-duty truck, although it’s more efficient. The RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 are considered heavy-duty trucks because they have heavier axle weights and GVWRs capable of towing and hauling larger loads.
How Much Can RAM Trucks Tow?
RAM trucks are available in distinct trim levels and have multiple engine options, so their capacities will vary. The RAM 1500 can generally haul things such as travel trailers and boats, while the RAM 2500 can tow even larger items such as a sailboat or fifth-wheel RV. For the largest jobs, you’ll want the RAM 3500, which can tow heavier trailers like flatbeds and goosenecks.
What’s GVWR?
A truck’s GVWR refers to its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. This is the maximum weight allowed in the fully-loaded vehicle, including its curb weight, payload, and passengers. It’s distinct from gross combined weight rating (GCWR), incorporating trailer weight into the equation.
What’s Payload Capacity?
Your vehicle’s towing capacity is how much your vehicle can pull on a trailer. On the other hand, its payload capacity is how much it can carry. This is the weight you can safely haul in your truck bed.
